Fractions When learning in school, we explain the fraction 'half' as splitting a number or object into 2 equal parts of a whole. Similarly, when explaining the fraction 'quarter' we speak of splitting a number or object into 4 equal parts of a whole. We encourage children to use physical objects (and split these into equal groups of 2 or 4) to help them find the half or quarter of a number should they need to. Please start with the total number of items and then split into either 2 or 4 groups depending on the fraction you need to find.
