Science at Lee Brigg Infant & Nursery School is about developing children's ideas and ways of working, to enable them to make sense of the world in which they live, through investigation, as well as using and applying their scientific skills.
Through the science curriculum at Lee Brigg we aim to develop children's curiosity and introduce them to the true awe and wonder of the world around them.
Science lessons are carefully planned through our whole class topic areas, so that valuable links can be made across other subjects. We ensure coverage of the National Curriculum, for science across Key Stage 1 and work within and beyond the Early Year's Framework across our Foundation Stage.
As part of our curriculum ethos in school, we ensure that children engage in practical, 'hands on' learning, visits out, as well as visitors to school, to enhance their science experiences further.
During the year we have a science week to introduce the children to the famous scientists of today and from the past, whose work continues to affect our lives.
In science pupils will have the opportunity to:
• Ask simple questions and recognise that they can be answered in different ways
• Observe closely, using their five senses
• Use a range of scientific equipment and resources
• Make predictions about what they think might happen
• Plan and investigate
• Saying why and how things happen
• Perform simple tests
• Identify and classify
• Use their observations and ideas to suggest answers to questions
• Gather and record data to help answer questions
• Evaluate their own work and say how this can be improved
Our science curriculum in school promotes some of our key curriculum drivers.
Relationships are promoted as children work collaboratively, listen to and question the ideas of others. Health and Well-being is incorporated through their learning about plants, animals and humans. Children are expected to develop their independence in carrying out investigations, developing and sharing their own ideas and questions.
